  1. 1841-1919. French Impressionist painter. He
  2. met Monet and Sisley in the early 1860s, and
  3. together they formed the nucleus of the
  4. Impressionist movement. He developed a
  5. lively, colourful painting style with
  6. feathery brushwork and painted many
  7. voluptuous female nudes, such as The Bathers
  8. about 1884-87 (Philadelphia Museum of Art,
  9. USA). In his later years he turned to
  10. sculpture. Born in Limoges, Renoir trained as
  11. a porcelain painter. He joined an academic
  12. studio 1861, and the first strong influences
  13. on his style were the Rococo artists Boucher
  14. and Watteau and the Realist Courbet. In the
  15. late 1860s Impressionism made its impact and
  16. Renoir began to work outdoors. Painting with
  17. Monet, he produced many pictures of people at
  18. leisure by the river Seine. From 1879 he made
  19. several journeys abroad, to N Africa, the
  20. Channel Islands, Italy, and later to Britain,
  21. the Netherlands, Spain, and Germany. After
  22. his Italian visit of 1881 he moved towards a
  23. more Classical structure in his work, notably
  24. in Les Parapluies/Umbrellas about 1881-84
  25. (National Gallery, London). In 1906 he
  26. settled in the south of France. Many of his
  27. sculptures are monumental female nudes not
  28. unlike those of Maillol.
